C# 7 introduced pattern matching with the extension of the switch statement and the is operator offering the const pattern, the type pattern, and the var pattern. With C# 8 an extension of pattern matching is planned, including the property pattern, the recursive pattern, and a new switch – the switch expression. 

Today, we are releasing the .NET Core September 2018 Update. This update includes .NET Core 2.1.5 and .NET Core SDK 2.1.403 and contains important reliability fixes. 

Today is the official GA release for .NET 5, and along with it we are excited to share the latest updates with our recent release of C#/WinRT version 1.0. C#/WinRT provides WinRT projection support for .NET 5 based apps. The Windows SDK leverages this technology and is now integrated with the .NET 5.0 SDK to expose Windows APIs through the new Target Framework Monikers. In addition to the Windows SDK support added for .NET 5, C#/WinRT itself allows component authors to build their own .NET 5 projections using the CsWinRT NuGet package.  

In .NET 8 we plan to add a new project template, Blazor Web Application, that covers all combinations of server-hosted projects (traditional Blazor Server apps, Blazor WebAssembly hosted, and the new unified architecture that allows use of Server, WebAssembly, and SSR in a single project). It will work by multitargeting over net8.0 and net8.0-browser.

The current plan is that C# 8.0 will ship at the same time as .NET Core 3.0. However, the features will start to come alive with the previews of Visual Studio 2019 that we are working on.
