Rust – the Ultimate Programming Language?

What makes a good programming language? Syntax? Compiler? Tools and ecosystem? It is tempting to say “all of that” but in that case, why there are so many different programming languages? All these components are very important but they alone can’t make the language “good”. One of essential things is the purpose — like languages for rapid development, or development of distributed algorithms, or general purpose for high-level and low-level applications, or easy to learn, or safe to use and so on.

The gist of the story goes as follow:

1. The most popular languages are JavaScript/TypeScript and Python with roughly 20% of all pull requests each. In effect, if you put JavaScript/TypeScript and Python together, you get about 40% of all pull requests.
2. Then you get the second tier languages: Java and Scala, C/C++, and Go. They all are in the 10% to 15% range.
3. Finally, you have PHP, Ruby and C# that all manage to get about 5% of all pull requests.
4. Other languages are typically far below 5%.

Swift, Apple's powerful new programming language, is now open source on GitHub. Developers can submit bug fixes and enhancements, and help bring the language to new platforms.

Microsoft is working on integrating Rust, a programming language that emphasizes performance, type safety, and concurrency, into the Windows 11 kernel. According to David Weston, Vice President, Enterprise and OS Security at Microsoft, the company plans to boot Windows 11 with Rust code inside in the near future.
