DARPA Wants All C Converted To Rust

After more than two decades of grappling with memory safety issues in C and C++, the software engineering community has reached a consensus. It’s not enough to rely on bug-finding tools. The preferred approach is to use “safe” programming languages that can reject unsafe programs at compile time, thereby preventing the emergence of memory safety issues.

Kent’s rules, from Extreme Programming Explained are:

• Runs all the tests
• Has no duplicated logic. Be wary of hidden duplication like parallel class hierarchies
• States every intention important to the programmer
• Has the fewest possible classes and methods

In my experience, these don’t quite serve the needs of software design. My four rules might be that a well-designed system:

• is well-covered by passing tests.
• has no abstractions not directly needed by the program.
• has unambiguous behavior.
• requires the fewest number of concepts.

Vue.js is a popular javascript framework for building user interfaces. The core Vue library is focussed on doing one thing and doing that one thing really well which is building user interfaces. Vue currently has 175000 github stars on its repo which makes it the third most starred github repository in the world. 

Today we’d like to share four typography animations with you. Letters are such a great thing to play with and they allow for so many interesting interactions and effects to enhance a design and make decorative headlines stand out. For some animations we use anime.js. Charming.js helps us with the needed structure for the letters. We use some modern CSS properties like CSS Grid and CSS Variables in the demos, so please view them with a capable browser.  Demo

lockfixed is a jQuery plugin which allows for DOM elements to be positioned anywhere on the page, and lock within the user's viewport when scrolling. Common use case is a menu under a header, which on scrolling stays within the viewport and doesn't overflow the footer.

Degrades nicely on mobile and tablet browsers and doesn't have any CSS prerequisites.  Demo

This prevents users from being able to zoom a page on some browsers and operating systems. This can have serious negative consequences for people with low vision, elderly people and pretty much anyone who has to or wants to zoom in.
