GitHub Issues

The GitHub Issues integration allows you to search and reference your issues from the commit message box in VS, in response to this suggestion ticket. You can reference an issue or a pull request by typing # or clicking on the # button in the lower right side of the commit message text box. If you weren't already authenticated to access related issues, you will now be prompted to sign in to take advantage of this feature.

Line Unstaging

To continue improving our line-staging (aka interactive staging) feature, we've added unstage. You can now use the tool tip option to unstage changes, line by line, as requested here Unstage individual lines and hunks in a file - 4 votes

Arm64

We continue to build native support for Arm64 on Windows 11 for the most popular developer scenarios. We now support the .NET Multi-platform App UI (MAUI) workload on Arm64 Visual Studio.

C++

• Available as a preview feature, you can now view Unreal Engine logs without leaving VS. To see the logs from the Unreal Engine Editor, click View > Other Windows > UE Log. To filter your logs, click on the "Categories" or "Verbosity" dropdowns. Since this is an experimental feature, feedback is greatly appreciated.
• You can now import STM32CubeIDE projects for embedded development within Visual Studio with File > Open > Import STM32CubeIDE project. This generates a CMake project with device flashing and debugging settings for STLink. You must have the STM32CubeIDE installed with the board support package for your device. More details available here.
• You can use the new CMake Debugger to debug your CMake scripts at build time. You can set breakpoints based on filenames, line numbers, and when CMake errors are triggered. Additionally, you can view call stacks of filenames and watch defined variables. Currently, this only works with bundled CMake, and projects targeting WSL or remote machines are not supported yet. We are actively working to add more support to the CMake debugger, and feedback is greatly appreciated. 

In addition to Windows 10, WinJS 4.0 supports the latest versions of all your favorite browsers, including the new Microsoft Edge. We realize that many developers are more familiar with, and may prefer to use, other frameworks for various parts of their app. We have checked in wrappers for AngularJS, KnockoutJS, and ReactJS to our GitHub project. You can now create Windows or web applications using other web frameworks, while still having access to the rich set of controls that WinJS provides.

In the C++ world we don’t create a class witch contains 5 methods and 2 fields like in Java or C#. We do more. A lot more. Our class are consequent and take a lot of stuff inside because it is interesting to have a project with 10 files of 100 KB rather than 300 files of 3 KB organized with fuzzy concepts. We do OOP better. It’s more compact, it’s real, it just works

One Blazor Template to Rule Them All in .NET 8

• You can now import and export an installation configuration file that specifies which workloads and components should be installed with an instance of Visual Studio.
• We have improved the debugging experience for NuGet packages using the new symbol package format (.snupkg).
• Step back in debugger is now available in C++ for Enterprise customers.
• C++ IntelliSense now responds to changes in the remote environment for both CMake and MSBuild projects targeting Linux.
• We have made updates to UWP Desktop Bridge framework packages and added support for ARM64 C++ Native Desktop scenarios.
• We added support for the range-v3 library with the MSVC 15.9 compiler.
• We fixed several bugs in the F# compiler and F# tools.
• Language service support for new TypeScript features for semantic file renaming and project references.
• Improved Node.js development by updating Vue.js templates and adding support for unit testing using the Jest framework.
• We added SharePoint 2019 project templates, so you can migrate existing SharePoint 2013 and 2016 projects to SharePoint 2019.

Top Issues Fixed in 15.9

• No way to change "Find All References" background color.
• "Visual C++ Resource Editor Package" load failed.
• VS2017 v15.8 Build does not start if XAML files are not manually saved first.
• Installation failed - manifest signature verification failed.
• Update 15.8.6 breaks Installer Projects.
• Scrolling up with the arrow key causes Visual Studio to page up.
• After updating to 15.8.1, data tip does not show when debugging.
• System.InvalidProgramException: Common Language Runtime detected an invalid program..
• Solution Explorer does not remain pinned after closing Visual Studio.
• Navigation bar in editor has trouble handling long method names. 

Issues Fixed in 15.9.23

• Fixed C++ compiler bug for proper folding of inline variable dynamic initializers. Ported from the VS 2019 16.0 release.
• Security improvements in vctip.exe.
• A change to enable Enterprise IT administrators and deployment engineers to configure tools like Microsoft Update client & SCCM to determine applicability of VS2017 updates hosted on Microsoft Update Catalog & WSUS.

• .NET Core Denial of Service Vulnerability 

Did you know that DotVVM can be used to incrementally modernize old ASP.NET Web Forms applications and lift them to .NET Core? It is much easier than doing a full rewrite, and the application can be deployed at any time during the entire process.

• Install DotVVM NuGet package in your Web Forms site
• Create a DotVVM master page using the same CSS
• Start converting ASPX pages to DotHTML syntax, one at a time
• When all the Web Forms pages are gone, change your CSPROJ to use .NET Core 

In this post, I will describe how to port a desktop application from .NET Framework to .NET Core. I picked a WinForms application as an example. Steps for WPF application are similar and I’ll describe what needs to be done different for WPF as we go. I will also show how you can keep using the WinForms designer in Visual Studio even though it is under development and is not yet available for .NET Core projects.
