A plan for version 8.0 and Ivy 

.NET 8 Preview 1 is now available! This is the first preview of the next major version of .NET, which will include the next wave of innovations for web development with ASP.NET Core.

In .NET 8 we plan to make broad investments across ASP.NET Core. Below are some of the areas we plan to focus on: 

  The "Blazor United" effort is really a collection of features we're adding to Blazor so that you can get the best of server & client based web development. These features include: Server-side rendering, streaming rendering, enhanced navigations & form handling, add client interactivity per page or component, and determining the client render mode at runtime. We've started delivering server-side rendering support for Blazor with .NET 8 Preview 3, which is now available to try out. We plan to deliver the remaining features in upcoming previews. We hope to deliver them all for .NET 8, but we'll see how far we get. 

The latest update for Visual Studio 2022 is officially out. Offering a comprehensive suite of enhancements that span productivity, programming languages, and enterprise management, this general release is a monumental step forward. Developed with extensive user feedback, this version is fully compatible with .NET 8, which is also generally available as of today. 

Ivy, sweet Ivy

This is a long awaited release for the community, as Ivy is now the default compiler/renderer in Angular 🌈. 

.NET 8 RC1 is now available. This is our first of two release candidates. This release includes a new AOT mode for both Android and WASM, System.Text.Json improvements, and Azure Managed Identity support for containers. Now is great time to pick up and test .NET 8 if you haven’t yet.  

.NET 8 Release Candidate 2 (RC2) is now available and includes many great new improvements to ASP.NET Core!

This is the last release candidate that we plan to share before the final .NET 8 release later this year. Most of the planned features and changes for .NET 8 are part of this release candidate and are ready for you to try out. .NET 8 Preview 7 is now available. We’re already at the final preview release for .NET 8 and will now shift to release candidates. Almost all new features for the release are in their final shape. System.Text.Json and codegen have the biggest changes in this build. You’ll want to take a look at those. Now is great time to pick up and test .NET 8 if you haven’t yet.

Scroll down to see the list of features included in this preview. .NET 8 is a long-term support (LTS) release. This blog post covers the major themes and goals that drive the prioritization and selection of enhancements to develop. .NET 8 preview and release candidate builds will be delivered monthly. As usual, the final release will be delivered sometime in November at .NET Conf. 

In .NET 8 we plan to add a new project template, Blazor Web Application, that covers all combinations of server-hosted projects (traditional Blazor Server apps, Blazor WebAssembly hosted, and the new unified architecture that allows use of Server, WebAssembly, and SSR in a single project). It will work by multitargeting over net8.0 and net8.0-browser.
