Wow – this was probably our biggest update ever! Version 2.0 of IdentityServer4 is not only incorporating all the feedback we got over the last year, it also includes the necessary updates for ASP.NET Core 2 – and also has a couple of brand new features. On 16th November 2016, Nat Friedman and James Montemagno introduced Visual Studio for Mac, the newest member of the Visual Studio family at Connect(); 2016 event. You'll often hear the terms framework
and platform
used interchangeably. This can be very confusing. You'll hear that .NET Core is a platform. Then you'll read that .NET Core is cross-platform. Next, you'll learn that .NET Core is a framework. And it doesn't help that framework is part of the name of the original full .NET Framework.
In this post, I explain the difference between frameworks and platforms and explain why sometimes you'll see .NET being referred to as a framework and other times see it referred to as a platform.
.NET applications however rely on the ciphers provided by the OS, and the only way to get new ciphers into the OS is through a patch from Microsoft. Unsupported versions of Windows typically do not receive these patches, so over time you can expect an increasing number of websites to stop working with .NET applications.
As you may remember, Microsoft has removed the IE Mode feature from Microsoft Edge. THe company has limited it to enterprise customers and IT admins. They have also stated that the feature was released to the public for testing purposes only. Here is a bit of good news - you can re-enable IE Mode when needed with recent versions of Edge!
