23,765 people from 137 countries took part in the recent State of JS survey and while there are some common criticisms of the project, the results are nonetheless interesting and we’ll be digging into some in forthcoming issues. Standouts include:
- Svelte took the top frontend framework crown from React for developer satisfaction.
- Testing Library jumped straight to #1 for testing libraries.
- More developers than ever are producing PWAs or using WebAssembly.
- 86% of respondents are using VS Code to work on their code.

Linus Torvalds talks AI, Rust adoption, and why the Linux kernel is 'the only thing that matters'
Switching to a more modern topic, the introduction of the Rust language into Linux, Torvalds is disappointed that its adoption isn't going faster. "I was expecting updates to be faster, but part of the problem is that old-time kernel developers are used to C and don't know Rust. They're not exactly excited about having to learn a new language that is, in some respects, very different. So there's been some pushback on Rust."

The gist of the story goes as follow:
- The most popular languages are JavaScript/TypeScript and Python with roughly 20% of all pull requests each. In effect, if you put JavaScript/TypeScript and Python together, you get about 40% of all pull requests.
- Then you get the second tier languages: Java and Scala, C/C++, and Go. They all are in the 10% to 15% range.
- Finally, you have PHP, Ruby and C# that all manage to get about 5% of all pull requests.
- Other languages are typically far below 5%.

JS Is Weird
JavaScript is a great programming language, but thanks to the fact that its initial release was built in only ten days back in 1995, coupled with the fact that JS is backward-compatible, it's also a bit weird. It doesn't always behave the way you might think. In this quiz, you'll be shown 25 quirky expressions and will have to guess the output. Even if you're a JS developer, most of this syntax is probably, and hopefully, not something you use in your daily life.
Immutability comes with a lot of benefits, but sometimes it can be a bit cumbersome to deal with when you only want to update some properties. Since the object is immutable, you need to create a copy with all the existing values and the new updated one.

On this page, we match two chess engines against one another. They are identical in nearly every detail, including source code! The only difference is that one has a flag set to be interpreted as asm.js, a specialized and strict JavaScript subset that allows JavaScript engines to employ specialized compilation to dramatically speed up execution.
