When we started the Google Code project hosting service in 2006, the world of project hosting was limited. We were worried about reliability and stagnation, so we took action by giving the open source community another option to choose from. Since then, we’ve seen a wide variety of better project hosting services such as GitHub and Bitbucket bloom. Many projects moved away from Google Code to those other systems. To meet developers where they are, we ourselves migrated nearly a thousand of our own open source projects from Google Code to GitHub.

SQL is back. Not just because writing glue code to kludge together NoSQL tools is annoying. Not just because retraining workforces to learn a myriad of new languages is hard. Not just because standards can be a good thing.

But also because the world is filled with data. It surrounds us, binds us. At first, we relied on our human senses and sensory nervous systems to process it. Now our software and hardware systems are also getting smart enough to help us. And as we collect more and more data to make better sense of our world, the complexity of our systems to store, process, analyze, and visualize that data will only continue to grow as well.

Looking at these side-by-side randomly generated visualizations, neither of them seem substantively different from a distribution perspective. All to say, when generating a random color palette, there probably wasn't any need for me to use the Crypto module—I probably should have just stuck with Math. It's much faster and feels to be just as random. I'll leave the Crypto stuff to any client-side cryptography work (which I've never had to do).

In Google we build all our software with a tool called Bazel. We’ve been using it for the past over 12 years to build projects with any size — from small internal apps, to large applications such as Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Cloud Console. 

• Entity Framework 7 RC1 (which we used here), is slow, but later builds are faster. It’s still not going to top any chart, but it’s currently faster than EF6, according to tests with a local build. We’ll update the benchmark with results from RC2 when it’s released.  

The referencesource repository contains sources from Microsoft .NET Reference Source that represent a subset of the .NET Framework. This subset contains similar functionality to the class libraries that are being developed in .NET Core. We intend to consult the referencesource repository as we develop .NET Core. It is also for the community to leverage to enable more scenarios for .NET developers.
